Lightning Ridge
Une ville réputée par les opales noires de grande qualité.La ville a 1200 habitants et 80 000 visiteurs par an espèrent de trouver une belle opale ou simplement curieux de voir la vie à l'outback. La civilisation ne manque pas dans cet endroit, on y trouve l'hébergement et des restaurants de qualité, ainsi que nombreux magasins avec des souvenirs pour les touristes.
Par une légende aborigène un énorme feu a tombé sur la terre et dispersé les pierres de couleur vives sur le pays.
Opale noire est présente même dans les poémes

C'était Charles Nettleton, premier européen qui a découvert ces pierres en 1902. Il travaillait à White Cliffs, mais pour manque de moyen il se déplaçait à Queensland. Très convaincu, qu'il y a plus d opales à News South Wales, il retournait à chercher sérieusement des opales pas loin de la frontière avec Queensland. Cette endroit a été nommé plus tard comme Nettleton's Hill de Station Angledool. C'est le lieu où se trouve le village de Lightning Ridge aujourd'hui. (Connu aussi comme Warrangulla au début de 20 siècle).
A number of famous stones have been found at Lightning Ridge, including the 822 g 'Big Ben' and the 'Flame Queen' which was sold for £80 because the miner hadn't eaten a proper meal for three weeks.T
